NDA And CDS SSB Interview: Everything You Need To Know

Those students who wish to join the Indian Armed Forces by clearing the NDA OR CDS exam are interviewed by the Service Selection Board, organized by the respective organization. The interviews are conducted with candidates who pass the written test. Thus, for the candidate to succeed in the SSB interview, he or she must have all the skills and mental attitude besides confidence. Here it is necessary to specify that the SSB Interview Process takes five days and its purpose is to find out the level of the candidate’s skills and physical fitness. The SSB has a strict assessment process to arrive at a conclusion. This ensures that only the most competent candidates will be given admission in the Indian Armed Forces.
Overview of the SSB Interview Process:
The SSB interview process comprises two distinct stages: Stage I and Stage II. Only candidates who successfully clear Stage 1 will be able to proceed to the second stage. The SSB interview process involves the examination of each candidate by three examiners: the interviewing officer, the group testing officer, and the psychologist. Each examiner assesses the candidate independently before drawing their conclusion about the candidate's potential.
Stage I
Officer Intelligence rating (OIR) Test:
Verbal Reasoning:
- Approximately 50 to 60 verbal questions are presented to candidates.
- Candidates have a time limit of 30 minutes to answer these questions.
- Verbal reasoning topics include series, identifying the odd one out, speed/distance/time calculations, and questions related to blood ties.
Non-Verbal Reasoning:
- About 50 nonverbal questions are contained in this section.
- A total of 40 minutes is allowed for these questions that comprise part of the test.
- Non- verbal reasoning can be described as involving problem solving and decision making out of speech context and it has two aspects; it entails analyzing of images as well as interpreting of images.
Picture Perception Description Test (PPDT):
- Participants are shown an image for a period of 30 seconds.

Stage II
Psychological Test:
Thematic Apperception Test (TAT):

Word Association Test (WAT):
- Candidates are presented with a series of sixty words.
- Each word is displayed for only 50 seconds.
- Candidates need to jot down the first idea or concept that occurs to their mind upon seeing the word on display.
Situation Reaction Test (SRT):
- The candidates are given a booklet with sixty written situations.
- The general layout of the test is such that a candidate should be able to respond to all the 60 situations within the timeframe.
- Candidates are only allowed to 30 minutes in order to answer the 60 situations.
Self-Description Test (SD):
- The Self-Description Test takes a total of fifteen minutes.
- Within this time frame, candidates must write five separate paragraphs, each focusing on the opinions of different individuals: parents/guardians and friends, teachers and our superiors.
- The points should prove that these individuals view the candidate in the way described in the paragraphs.
Group Testing Officer (GTO) Tasks
Group Discussion:
- A set of candidates is provided with a case or an issue related to contemporary issues or subjects.
- While these two terms refer to interactions between the candidates, the former focuses on an exchange of opinion in which they consider different aspects of the problem.
- The discussion of each group takes 20minutes.
Group Planning Exercise (Military Planning Exercise):
- Candidates are presented with a practical situation and must develop a written strategy to address the problem.
- Candidates outline their group's answer and draw a firm conclusion during the exercise.
- It is important to demonstrate planning and decision-making skills while collaborating with the group.
- The exercise is conducted within a timeframe of 20 minutes.
Progressive Group Task:
- This task occurs in the context of the GTO interview, and it is the first one that is carried out outside.
- There are four obstacles that are to be completed within 40-50 minutes and the level of difficulty gradually rises.
- The group is provided with structures, helping materials, and loads to challenge the obstacles.
- This means that the candidates should be able to tackle the tasks as a team and where there are obstacles involved common objects such as ropes, planks, and wood logs should be used..
Half Group Task:
- The group size is reduced by half compared to the Progressive Group Task (PGT).
- Candidates have additional opportunities to showcase their abilities and leadership skills.
Lecturette:
- It is an individual activity where candidates deliver a three-minute presentation.
- Candidates have three minutes to prepare from a set of four lecture topics.
- The focus is on the candidate's self-assurance, perspective, and presentation skills.
Individual Obstacles:
- Ten obstacles are set up for candidates to handle one at a time.
- Each obstacle is assigned a point value ranging from one to ten.
- Candidates are given three minutes to complete these obstacles.
Group Obstacle Race (Snake Race):
- All groups participate in a race where they have to pull a rolled-up tent resembling a snake through a series of six obstacles.
Command Task:
- One person in the candidate team is made the commander while the rest of the team is his subordinates; a commander may be accompanied by two or three helpers.
- Any candidate is allowed to choose two persons from his group to help him in this chore.
- The barrier must be removed before a given period of time in accordance with the tools at the disposal.
Final Group Task:
- This task is similar to the Progressive Group Task (PGT)
- It involves a single obstacle.
- The task must be completed within a time limit of 15 to 20 minutes.
Candidate Interview:
- The interview with the candidate takes place on the same day as the other activities.
- It is a one-on-one interview conducted by a recruiting officer.
- The SSB questions typically last around 35 to 40 minutes.
Conference:
- On the last day of SSB Interview all board member such as president, deputy president, psychologists, technical officers and GTOs sit with the candidates.
- The main idea of the given conference is to talk to the candidates and ask them, for instance, questions concerning basic concepts.
- Height, weight, and ethnicity do not play a role while thousands of message boards have candidates’ coordination, conduct, thoughts, and words expounded by the board members.

Medical Examination and Result:
- After the conference, candidates are sent for a medical examination.
- The medical examination is conducted to ensure that the selected candidates meet the required medical standards.
- The SSB result is made public approximately one hour after the board meeting concludes.
- Candidates who are selected undergo additional three to five days of medical tests..
- The final merit list is released after the candidate successfully passes the medical examination.
